Robert Laidlaw had two passions: Business and the Christian religion. This book covers both in detail. Laidlaw was sort of an early 20th century version of Jeff Bezos with the "new" concept of catalogues and mail order purchase. He was shrewd and did what many successful businesspeople do - he saw what had worked overseas (America) and he brought it home to NZ, despite facing criticism and doubt from all quarters. He worked hard and through force of will, saw to it that his "Laidlaw Leeds" succeeded. He had a gift for leadership and communication.
Robert merged his fast growing company with the struggling Farmer's trading co and, despite difficult travails, steered the combined co to success. In his religion too, he put his whole self into his work.
An excellent book for a young NZ'er looking for a NZ business person to look up to, as well as anyone interested in the history of the Farmers company and the development of NZ industry in the first 50 years of the 20th century, through WWI and WWII.
