About

That memorable feat of flying across the Pacific Ocean from California to Australia in 1928 by C. E. Kingsford-Smith, C. T. P. Ulm, in their aircraft 'Southern Cross’.

A long-distance flight veteran with both Kingsford Smith and Ulm, this book describes the first flight, via Suva and Hawaii (21 October-4 November 1934) across the Pacific from San Francisco, to Hawaii, Fiji and on to Australia in a Lockheed Altair.

It took Kingsford-Smith several years to raise enough money for this trans-Pacific flight from America to Australia. Eventually the Australian Government contributed £3500. After sailing to America he needed to learn about the types of plane available and the conditions he could expect on the flight. Settling on 3 Wright Whirlwind engines for their reliability and strength and a Fokker plane for its endurance, he embarked on finding further finance for the rebuilding and upgrading

On the 21st May the plane and its four crew left Oakland, USA for Honolulu, then Suva, Fiji, before arriving at Brisbane on 9th June
The Southern Cross later flew to Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra.

A very detailed account of the journey is given, including many incidents and accounts of storms, along with actual Log Book entries – all making fascinating reading.

Ironically, both Kingsford-Smith and Ulm disappeared during separate experimental flights several years after their Southern Cross flight.

Illustrated throughout with monochrome images and maps, decorated end papers.
