About

An illustrated collection of Kiwiana, documenting the stories behind the objects, events and people that have defined and distinguished the popular culture of New Zealand.

Reader Review:

I figured I'd already be sort of aware of most of these. And I was. But not all. For example, I never knew that marching is (or at least was) part of New Zealand's cultural identity.

Probably the coolest piece of information was how we came to be known as Kiwi's. Not as simple as just a association with our country's endemic bird, which is what I, and probably many others, originally thought. It was because of shoe polish. An Australian developed a new shoe polish and named it Kiwi in honour of his NZer wife. Then the first world war increased the need for shoe polish (all those soldiers, all those boots, belts and horse tack) and "Kiwi" went from being associated with the shoe polish, to being associated with the NZ soldiers, to being associated with New Zealanders in general.

All the regulars make a mention, Pavlova, rugby, Jaffas, the local 4square, beach life. The furtherest away you can possibly live from the beach is between 119km to 130km (depending on your source). Which seems like a lot to us but then I think of landlocked Europe or inland states in the USA.
