The author's autobiography, Major General Sir Fred Thompson Bowerbank KBE (1880–1960) was Director-General of Medical Services for the New Zealand Army and Air Force between 1939 and 1947.
He moved to Brockenhurst, in England, and then to France. That was the beginning of a career which led, in World War II, to the post of Director-General of Medical services. A heart specialist and an Army man, Sir Fred Bowerbank is well-known amongst New Zealanders and medical men and authorities in the United States, Canada, Australia, and England. He was also involved in setting up a field hospital at the time of the Napier earthquake.
