The story of the author's grandparents James and Suzanna Tarling, who came from Wales in the ship Westland in 1880, to a life of challenges in colonial Canterbury.
On 28 Feb 1880 the sailing ship "Westland", after a record-breaking voyage of 86 days from Plymouth, anchored in Lyttleton Harbour. On board were Susannah Tarling, her husband and sons. Susannah was Mona Anderson's grandmother.
