ABOUT
Frank Penn’s 1920 account of traversing the Tararua Ranges and exploring the Otaki district at a time when both were still rugged, lightly developed landscapes. It is one of the earliest comprehensive written accounts of a Tararua Southern Crossing.
He records the physical demands of the crossings, the weather’s unpredictability, and the striking contrasts between dense bush, high ridges, and river valleys.
It serves as an early tourism marketing tool and mountaineering record for the lower North Island of New Zealand. The book reads as both an adventure memoir and a regional portrait, preserving the atmosphere of New Zealand’s backcountry before modern roads and recreation reshaped it.
Illustrated throughout with monochrome images, maps, vintage adverts.
