ABOUT
Combined volumes 1 and 2 facsimile copy of New Zealand history originally published in 1845.
One of the most vivid, firsthand historical accounts of early British colonisation in New Zealand. Provides a lively, highly detailed, yet famously partisan look at the arrival of British settlers. E.J. Wakefield arrived in New Zealand aboard the Tory in 1839 when he was just 19 years old, serving as secretary to his uncle, Colonel William Wakefield.
Volume 1 details the initial 1839 expedition, the first complex land transactions with Māori, and the chaotic initial establishment of Wellington and Whanganui.
Volume 2 expands on the physical expansion of the settlements up to 1844, escalating tensions over land ownership, and firsthand political clashes.
