Author Lucien H. Thayer was a newspaper reporter with the Boston Globe before joining the U.S. Army in 1917. Later he was commissioned as an officer in the Air Service and sent to France in June 1918. While in France, Thayer was assigned to the Air Service Headquarters as a historian. During his time in France, Thayer was tasked with writing a history of the U.S. Air Service in Europe.
