ABOUT
Stemming from pre-war American notions of long-range strategic bombing, the Boeing B-29 Superfortress emerged during World War II with great rapidity.
Despite the enormity of the problems associated with the aircraft's systems complexity and far-flung sub-contracted manufacture, the Superfortress was rushed into service against Japan during 1944. Results were at first poor, as a result of tactical problems and the ranges over which the B-29s had to operate.
However, by 19445 these difficulties had been largely ironed out, and the B-29 fleets burned the industrial and urban heart out of Japan before capping the type's wartime career with the atomic raids on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
Illustrated throughout with monochrome and colour images, fine line drawings, including on end papers.
