Functions as both an early regional guide and a dense historical record and it weaves together early European whaling stories, the French settlement attempt at Akaroa, and vital records of Māori heritage and geography.
W. A. Taylor spent decades walking and cycling across every bay, valley, and ridge of Banks Peninsula. He was an amateur ethnologist who developed deep, respectful ties with the local Ngāi Tahu Māori kāinga (settlements) at places like Wairewa (Little River) and Taumutu.
