As a civil transport, the type ushered in the true era of long-range “big jet” air transport, offering new levels of speed and flight comfort. And as a military type, the Model 717 brought the art of inflight-refueling to a fully practical pitch.
The basic C/KC-135 series has proved wonderfully adaptable into a bewildering number of specialized variants, and the civil Model 707-300 has provided the aerodynamic and structural basis for the E-3A Sentry AWACS aircraft.
