ABOUT
A fictional story loosely based on the life of Captain Bollons, the captain of the ships Tutanekai and Hinemoa in the 1920s.
On a spring day in 1881 a sailing vessel from England was wrecked on the south coast of the South Island of New Zealand opposite Stewart Island. On board was the young John Bollons, an apprentice, aged sixteen. For five years he lived with the Maoris, learning their customs, language, and way of life. Later he joined the Government steamer which went round the coast checking on lighthouses and other matters.
