DESCRIPTION
Founded in 1937 and opened in 1941 in Wellington's Botanic Gardens, the Carter Observatory served as New Zealand's national observatory for decades.
The observatory traditionally printed these annual handbooks to foster grassroots public astronomy. The 1996 edition is highly regarded by science historians because it detailed the observatory's modernized schools program and its unique initiatives to incorporate traditional Maori astronomical knowledge (Tatai Arorangi) into curriculum resources.
