ABOUT
A collection of comic short stories and anecdotes featuring illustrations by cartoonist Frank Bruno.
Written in a local, vernacular style meant to capture everyday New Zealand situations of the 1960s. However, it is primarily remembered today for reinforcing harmful racial stereotypes.
The stories centered on a "comic Māori" stock character—co-opting "Hori" (the Māori transliteration of George) as a generic caricature. The series depicted Māori as lazy, unpunctual, and happy-go-lucky. At the time, prominent Māori leaders like Graham Latimer and John Rangihau publicly criticized the books for deeply damaging the public perception of Māori and upholding a biased colonial mindset.
Illustrated throughout with monochrome line drawings.
