The story of pioneers who developed the cocksfoot grass seed industry on the rugged slopes of Banks Peninsula.
During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Banks Peninsula became a world-renowned hub for cocksfoot (Dactylis glomerata) grass seed production. The industry grew out of a symbiotic relationship with native forest clearance; as the dense bush was logged or burned off, early settlers sowed cocksfoot seed directly into the fresh ash.
Often referred to as "the seed that followed the sawmill," this hardy pasture grass thrived on the steep hillsides where standard plowing was impossible.
