ABOUT
Designed as a replacement for the F6F Hellcat, the F8F Bearcat was the last of the great Grumman 'cat' series of piston-engined navy fighters.
Combing massive engine power with an airframe much smaller than that of its predecessor, the Bearcat had remarkable maneuverability, speed and rate of climb, but it arrived too late for service in World War II and only saw action with the French Air Force in Indo-China.
Nowadays the Bearcat's performance is much exploited for air racing, and in 1969 a specially modified F8F-2 with a 2,500-hp engine averaged 483.04 mph, setting a world speed record for piston-engined aircraft.
Illustrated throughout with monochrome and colour images, fine line drawings. Decorated end papers.
