ABOUT
A comprehensive biography of Dr. Thomas Morland Hocken (1836–1910).
Dr. Hocken arrived in Dunedin, New Zealand, in 1862 at the age of 26. Alongside his busy profession as a medical practitioner, coroner, and philanthropist, he dedicated his life to amassing a vast collection of early New Zealand books, historical manuscripts, sketches, maps, photographs, and museum artifacts.
Before his death, he gifted this unparalleled collection of post-contact writing and historical material to the public. It became the foundation of Dunedin's renowned Hocken Collections (Te Uare Taoka o Hākena), which is managed by the University of Otago and is widely considered one of New Zealand's premier historical research repositories.
Illustrated throughout with monochrome and colour images and fine line drawings.
