The story of the Altmark, a German tanker that slipped into a Norwegian fjord in 1940, a supply ship to the Admiral Graf Spee, comprising of 300 British merchant seamen taken prisoner.
A party from HMS Cossack rescued the prisoners, setting the seal on what became known as 'The Altmark Affair'. The incident was made the subject of a propaganda exercise by both the British and Germans. The author has tried to separate the truth from the myth of this headline-making event of the early days of the Second World War.
