Sir James Fletcher built the firm into what was New Zealand’s largest listed company until the appearance of Telecom in the 1990s.
Fletcher enjoyed living dangerously and was never afraid to back his judgement. His story sheds new light on the depression years and the election of the first labour Government. He was Commissioner of Defence Construction during WW2, a delightful personality with a warm and humorous nature.
