A major biography of New Zealand's foremost poet traces the life of James K. Baxter.
Covers his early days in Otago to his final years in a remote community on the Wanganui River. Baxter's life was in many ways a chronicle of his times -- marriage and suburbia in the 1950s, a struggle with religious belief, and then, in the 1960s, the search for a fulfilling life.
Throughout it all there was the poetry -- acclaimed from the beginning and celebrated long after his death in 1972, at the age of forty-six. From his first verse written at seven and his first book published when he was eighteen, he was responsible for a remarkable collection of poetry, plays and prose.
