In the years immediately prior to Pearl Harbor the Japanese aircraft industry was popularly regarded in the West as copyist and incapable of original design.
Moreover, Japanese combat aircraft were widely believed to be outdated by international standards and derivative of obsolete American and European designs.
However, the opening phases of the Pacific War revealed, forcefully, the measure of Western miscalculation. This is a two part series devoted to all types of fighters operated by, or developed to experimental status, the Imperial Army Air Service.
Illustrated throughout with monochrome images, fine line and colour illustrations.
