ABOUT
Vintage guide to making and flying the Kedam kite written by traditional builder Adalbert Obak and anthropologist Robert K. McKnight.
The work uses traditional kite-making and flying as a powerful historical metaphor for the rapid societal, economic, and cultural transformations occurring in Palau. The text highlights the shift from kites being handcrafted out of natural bird feathers and fibers during village-wide gatherings to modern, store-bought items.
In Palauan language, kedam translates both to a child's toy kite and the great frigatebird (Fregata ariel).
Illustrated throughout with drawings and diagrams.
