ABOUT
History of Kirkcaldie & Stains that is one of New Zealand's oldest businesses.
When Scottish-born John Kirkcaldie and Englishman Robert Stains established their first store in a shed on the beach at Port Nicholson in November 1863, they started a tradition that continues today.
The fortunes of this remarkable company create a fascinating history. Julia Millen weaves together family stories and the many memories of staff and management with the documents of the business. The changing life of Wellington provides a rich background for the story of Kirkcaldie & Stains - the company that started as a shed on the beach, grew, survived and flourished as a proud department store.
Illustrated throughout with monochrome images and vintage adverts.
