Autobiography of this noted captain and shipmaster whose fifty-year career spanned the half-century that witnessed the most amazing changes ever known in the history of ships and the sea.
Captain Sir David Bone, Commodore Master of the Anchor Line fleet until he retired in 1946, was born at Glasgow in 1874 and went to sea at sixteen in the city of Florence, a full-rigged sailing ship of about 1200 tons. Joining the Anchor Line in 1899, he rose to command transatlantic liners of 17,000 tons and in them engaged in both World Wars.
