This is one of the most important and most readable records of pioneering in Canterbury during 1850.
Charlotte Godley left England for New Zealand late in 1849, with her husband John R. Godley, a prominent member of the Canterbury Association, which arranged for settlers to come Canterbury. These detailed letters to her mother in England, from 1850 to 1853, provide an important historical record of what the earliest settlers found, how they coped with problems. adversity, primitive conditions and some hardship as they created the foundations of what was to become a major city, an economic and agricultural powerhouse of early NZ.
