Motuarohia is a prominent island located in the Bay of Islands, New Zealand. Lennard details the rich 19th-century history of the island.
Includes its initial traditional Māori inhabitants, its subsequent purchase by John Roberton from local Ngapuhi chiefs (like Rewa) in 1839, and the tragic frontier events that unfolded there shortly after.
When Captain James Cook’s ship Endeavour dropped anchor in the Bay of Islands in late November 1769, the ship's crew interacted extensively with local Māori on and around Motuarohia. It was during these specific interactions that the ship's artist, Sydney Parkinson, drew the original sketch of the young chief's son, Otegoowgoow.
