ABOUT
An autobiographical memoir detailing Masterson's experiences as a young railway footplate worker and New Zealand steam engine driver from 1925 to roughly 1936
The author tells of his experiences during a decade on the footplate during the depression years, living in the Railway Company huts in the North Island high country. The narrative focuses heavily on his decade working the challenging, isolated, and steeply graded mountain sections of the North Island Main Trunk (NIMT) railway line.
There is a wealth of information about the various types of coal-fired steam locomotives in use then.
Illustrated throughout with monochrome images and maps.
