The highly qualified writer of this book has spent more than twenty years practicing navigation at sea and in the air, and he has spent ten years teaching the subject.

It is true that professional navigators at sea and in the air require complicated and expensive instruments with which to navigate great ships and fast aircraft. They also need Nautical or Air Almanacs and sets of nautical tables. But the uses of these instruments can be easily described in a book for the general reader, and extracts from almanacs and tables can be given as required. There is no reason whatever why a person of average intelligence, with a minimum of mathematical knowledge, cannot master all the basic theory and principles of navigation from this book.
