ABOUT
An invaluable primary account of early contact between Europeans and Māori.
Major Cruise visited New Zealand in 1820 aboard the British store ship HMS Dromedary, which was sent to gather kauri spars for the Royal Navy. Over his ten-month stay, primarily spent in the Northland region, Cruise kept a detailed journal documenting early New Zealand society just before widespread European colonisation.
It records interactions with notable chiefs, including Hongi Hika's departure for England, tribal customs, traditional clothing, tattoos (tā moko), and war dances (haka).
Cruise arrived at the onset of the Musket Wars, providing raw observations on the brutal realities of tribal warfare, treatment of slaves, and defenses of fortified villages (pā).
Illustrated throughout with monochrome fine line drawings.
