ABOUT
A notable historical memoir written by the English Regency buck Edward Markham (1801–1865).
Markham spent roughly eight and a half months in New Zealand, primarily residing in the Hokianga district (Kohukohu) and the Bay of Islands. During this pre-colonial era, he observed a frontier society before the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi.
He provided memorably irreverent and unvarnished portraits of early colonial figures like James Busby and F.E. Maning, alongside detailed accounts of early sawmilling, Māori customs, Christian missions, and the rescue of Mrs Guard in Taranaki.
Features facsimiles of Markham's original sketches, including watercolours and pen-and-ink drawings of landscape scenery and Māori villages.
Includes a separate loose newspaper cutting.
