ABOUT
Details how New Zealand evolved into one of the most car-dependent nations on Earth, tracing how the automobile transitioned from a rare luxury to a cultural institution that fundamentally reshaped Kiwi architecture, fashion, and urban environments.
It covers early milestones of New Zealand motoring, beginning with the first petrol-powered vehicles imported into Wellington in 1898 by Member of Parliament William McLean (who famously had to introduce a private bill just to legalise driving them at a maximum speed of 12 miles per hour).
Tracks the haphazard takeover of the Kiwi landscape by the automobile, moving through the post WWII eras, the unique cultural footprint of classic British imports, and the eventual modern dominance of the Japanese car industry.
Illustrated throughout with monochrome and colour images and drawings.
