ABOUT
A notable autobiographical memoir of a Napier doctor who reminiscences of his practice.
Dr. Waterworth operated a long-running clinic out of his surgery on Shakespeare Road in Napier. His autobiography provides invaluable, firsthand observations of community health, colonial-era medical constraints, and the social transformation of the Hawke's Bay region.
The most famous segment of the book details his heroic and harrowing experiences during the catastrophic 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake. Dr. Waterworth was famously called to the ruins of St. John's Cathedral to aid a woman trapped irrecoverably beneath the debris as fires closed in, bringing national focus to the agonizing choices faced by frontline disaster doctors.
