A notable exploration memoir written by New Zealand journalist and wartime pilot Douglas McKenzie who was part of the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition (TAE) of 1957–1958.
Chronicles the historic trek across Antarctica led by British explorer Sir Vivian Fuchs and New Zealand's Sir Edmund Hillary. McKenzie actually accompanied the expedition, driving one of the Ferguson farm tractors part of the way across the ice.
While it refers geographically to the polar landscape, it primarily describes the clashing personalities and leadership styles of Fuchs and Hillary. McKenzie famously provides a highly candid, unvarnished look at the internal friction of the expedition.
