ABOUT
The North American P-51 Mustang, America's greatest fighter aircraft, was actually designed, built and flown in 117 days.
Its predecessors, including the Curtiss P-40 and the Republic P-47 Thunderbolt, were useful aircraft but were neither fast enough nor maneuverable enough to challenge the Messerschmitt Bf-109 fighter in the skies over Europe. When Mustang was introduced in 1943 over Germany as an escort to the B-17 bomber, its role in the war was secured.
The development of the P-51 during World War II is told brilliantly by William Newby Grant of the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst.
Illustrated throughout with monochrome and colour images, diagrams.
