Records the little-known, but significant, impact Edward Main Chaffers had on the foundation and development of Wellington, New Zealand.
Although he lived there only two years 1839/41, he had earlier visited New Zealand as fourth officer of the Beagle on its 1831/36 Darwin voyaging. He resigned his master's RN commission in 1839 to command the New Zealand Company bark Tory bringing settlers to the Wellington area.
He undertook much coastal survey work including Wellington Harbour and Tory Channel, as well as similar work further afield. Later Wellington harbourmaster and became involved in colony's politics. His name features in several Wellington locations, but little has previously been written of him.
