Tells the chronicled history of the New Plymouth area, much of it derived from journal and diary entries and reminiscences. His recollections include the infant township of a dozen or so shops, dwellings scattered over a large area, unmetalled roads and occasional footpaths with irregular shipping; no communication with the outside world other than by sea.
