ABOUT
Memoir written by Scottish-born New Zealand pioneer, former sailor, and politician Robert Cunningham Bruce under the pen name "Able Seaman".
A vivid first-person account of 19th-century life "before the mast" as a deckhand on merchant ships across the globe, mixed with accounts of working on the Otago and Queensland goldfields and early colonial life in New Zealand.
Robert Cunningham Bruce (R.C. Bruce, 1843–1917) also served as a Member of Parliament for Rangitikei.
