Robert Graham was a pioneer colonist from Scotland, who in 1842 he sailed on the ship 'Jane Gifford' bound for Auckland, New Zealand.
In New Zealand he and his brother opened a general store. Several years later he purchased 20 acres of land including the hot springs at Waiwera and opened a hotel that catered to tourists. Over subsequent years Graham embarked on many land transactions. Fluent in Maori, Graham was a mediator between Te Pokiha Taranui and Petera Te Pukuatua (Maketu) in 1878.
