A detailed critique of the New Zealand government's 1971 South Island "Beech Scheme", which proposed the large-scale industrial logging of native forests.

In 1971, the New Zealand Forest Service released a report advocating for the clear-felling or intensive logging of nearly one million acres of native beech forest in Nelson, the West Coast, and Southland. The plan was to replace more than half of that targeted area with fast-growing, exotic plantations of Pinus radiata and Eucalyptus for the pulp and paper industry.

Searle was among the first to formally argue that native forests possess an inherent ecological value that should take priority over short-term commercial exploitation and timber profits.

Public outrage eventually forced the government to abandon the full scale of the scheme.
