ABOUT
Three distinct, early European perspectives on the potential exploitation and settlement of New Zealand before it officially became a British colony in 1840.
The anchor text is a modern reprint of John Savage's original work, Some Account of New Zealand, which was originally published in London in 1807. Savage was an English naval surgeon traveling aboard the ship Ferret, which anchored in the Bay of Islands for several weeks in late 1805.
It provides rare, early descriptions of Māori social structures, religion, language, arts, and customs. Savage famously struck up a friendship with a local Māori man named Te Mahanga, who voluntarily sailed back with Savage to London, becoming one of the first Māori to visit England.
Includes a few monochrome fine line drawings.
