In this vivid memoir Heinrich Harrer an Austrian, escaped from an English internment camp in India in 1943 and spent the next seven years in Tibet.
The story takes place during the Second World War and the interim period before the Communist Chinese People's Liberation Army moved into Tibet in 1950.
He was one of the first Europeans ever to enter and meet the Dalai Lama, and observed Tibets social practices, religion, politics, and people.
Illustrated throughout with monochrome images and map.
