It serves up specific historical snapshots, vignettes, and lesser-known historical anecdotes regarding the settlement of the Whanganui river basin and town district.
Chapple was a prolific local historian of the region, also penning Early Days in Whanganui (1840-1850) and Fragments of Wanganui History. Original printings of Sidelights on Wanganui History are considered rare, sought-after pieces of New Zealand regional ephemera.
