The S-16 originally designed as a two-seat trainer in 1914; the plane was soon employed in a reconnaissance roll and eventually as a fighter. Though out-classed by mid 1916 the S-16 holds the distinction of being the first indigenous Russian single-engined aircraft design to see series production.
