DESCRIPTION
A historic collection of lithographed plates showcasing the prominent landmarks and vistas of Antwerp, Belgium.
Published around 1851 by the print seller and map publisher François Tessaro, this compilation serves as an early example of tourism lithography.
The French inscription reads: "Souvenir d’Anvers, suite de vues et monuments les plus marquants. Publiés par F. Tessaro, Anvers." This translates to "Souvenir of Antwerp: a suite of the most outstanding views and monuments. Published by F. Tessaro, Antwerp."
The illustrations inside were crafted by notable artists of the era—including François Stroobant, Louis Joseph Ghemar, and H. Borremans. They depicted the "usual suspects" of historic Antwerp tourism: the Cathedral of Our Lady, historic monumental churches, the Exchange (Beurs), the statue of Rubens, and even a view of Tessaro's own storefront on the Schoenmarkt.
