ABOUT
Descriptive and pictorial account of early rural Australia; includes description of treatment of Aborigines by early settlers.
The first farmers were producers of food for the growing colony, but experiments in wool-growing proved successful and men with vision moved out of the cities in the tracks of the explorers. These were the squatters, who fought to rear sheep and cattle, ward off drought, flood, fire, stock diseases, attacks by Aboriginals. Many eventually accrued enormous wealth.
The authors trace the lives of these rural pioneers telling of the adventures, hardships and the endeavours of both the squatter and the settler, tracing the development of the rural economy of a growing nation.
Illustrated throughout with monochrome images.
