The autobiography of Sir Gordon Bell, the doyen of New Zealand surgery.
He underwent his medical training in pre-1914 Edinburgh, studied with the Mayo brothers at their famous USA clinic until joining the RAMC as a Casualty Clearing Station officer in France, 1915-18. In 1924 he was appointed to the part-time chair of surgery at the University of Otago and from 1925 until his retirement in 1952 he practised and taught in Dunedin.
