The Admiral's Cup is the world championship of ocean racing.
It began in 1957 when five members of the Royal Ocean Racing Club provided a challenge cup to be raced for by national teams of three boats in a series which included two races in Cowes Week, the 225-mile Channel Race, and the open 'Classic' 605-mile Fastnet Race.
That was a simple affair with just the United States and Britain competing. Now it has grown, with teams from nineteen nations taking part, and the competition has become progressively stiffer. What began as a friendly challenge between gentlemen yachtsmen has become the sailing grand prix with highly sophisticated racing machines, driven by sailors who spend much of their time actively engaged in the sport.
