Kimble Bent (1837–1916) was an American-born sailor who joined the British Army's 57th Regiment. Tired of harsh military discipline and a recent court-martial, Bent deserted his regiment in South Taranaki in 1865. He fled into the dense, unforgiving New Zealand bush.
Bent spent 16 years completely cut off from European society. He was taken in by the Ngāti Ruanui iwi, built fortifications, and served as a cartridge-maker and camp slave under the famous Māori chief and military strategist Tītokowaru.
It is highly regarded by historians for offering a rare, insider look at the Taranaki Land Wars from behind Māori lines.
