Documents the local history of the Houhora district in the Far North of New Zealand, alongside the lineage of the Wagener family.
The phrase "the desart shore" comes from a description by Captain James Cook, who mapped the Aupouri Peninsula and named it such due to its vast, rolling sandhills at the time.
Roy Wagener (1924–2003) was a prominent Far North local who also authored Gumfields of Aupouri and whose family established the iconic Subritzky Homestead and Wagener Museum at Houhora.
