The book captures the perspective of the "challengers"—the David Lange-led Labour opposition—as they scrambled to build a winning national campaign in just 30 days. The snap election was unexpectedly triggered on 14 June 1984 when Prime Minister Robert Muldoon, facing a caucus rebellion over anti-nuclear legislation from backbencher Marilyn Waring, called an early vote on live television.
Because Muldoon was visibly intoxicated during the late-night announcement, it famously became known as the "schnapps election." His strategic gamble was to catch a split Labour Party off-guard. However, the move backfired entirely.
